There had been no rain in the land for a long time. The Lord asked Elijah to go to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. He had commanded a widow there to give him food and drink.

Elijah came to a town gate and saw a woman gathering sticks, and he asked her to give him a piece of bread and a drink. The woman told him that she could give him water, but could not give him bread because she had only a little flour and oil left to make one last meal for her son and herself, that they may eat – and die.

Elijah asked her to go home and first make a small cake for him from what she had left and bring the cake to him, and then make something for her son and herself because the God of Israel promised that the jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.

She went away and did exactly what Elijah had told her. God made a wonderful thing happen. He gave the woman all the flour and oil she needed to make food for her family and Elijah every day.
