Samson was always at the centre of fighting which break out between the Israelites and the Philistines. At one time, Samson’s enemies from Judah captured, bound him up and delivered him to the Philistines. The spirit of the Lord came upon him in power, weakened his bond and he managed to shake his body free. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he used it as a weapon to strike down a thousand men.

Later, Samson fell in love with a woman called Delilah. The Philistines heard about this and a group of their rulers visited her. Each offered to give her 1100 pieces of silver if she would discover the secret of Samson’s strength. Samson joked about it at first, but finally he told Delilah that the true secret of his strength was his hair ( which actually was a sign of his commitment to God).

In the evening, when Samson fell soundly asleep with his head in her lap, she called a barber to shave off the seven braids of his hair.

Without his hair, Samson was weakened and easily overpowered and captured by the Philistines because the spirit of the Lord has left him. The cruel Philistines gouged out his eyes and put him to work grinding corn in the prison. But the hair on his head began to grow longer and longer each day.
